Houston attracts plenty of business these days, and by business, I mean the Sun. What it doesn’t attract however is ice cream.
Real estate company Home Bay has compiled a list of the “Best Ice Cream Cities in America,” and we’re not one of them. Their methodology uses plenty of different criteria with different weights on the overall score, including ice cream shops per capita, Google Trend activity and the average statewide cost of a small cup or cone.
Austin ranked 8 overall. San Antonio trailed behind at 27. Finally Dallas and Houston settled for the tail end of things at 42 and 46, respectively.
“Finding ice cream in Houston can be a challenge, with only 1.9 ice cream shops per 100,000 people – compared to New Orleans, which has 8.7!,” the initial statement read.
But ice cream has changed, or so I thought. Underground Creamery and others like it around the U.S. have latched onto the e-commerce model as an alternative to the traditional cart or brick-and-mortar setup. In addition, these companies found their customers on social media – not search engines. So what gives?
It’s a a difference of opinion when it comes to designating a city as good for ice cream. Alyssa Evans with Clever, another real estate company, says social media could be skewed when viewed across state lines. A shop in NYC might after all have a bigger footprint than one in Oklahoma. As for e-commerce …
“For example, it could just be a company based in San Jose that ships fancy ice cream around the state, and that doesn’t really speak to San Jose’s ice cream culture as much as it speaks to general interest from different areas.”
